Tech Reviews: Apple iPhone 6 Could Sport a Very Hi-Res 5.5-Inch Screen

Post on April 07,2014

The next iPhone could be significantly larger than the current ones, and have a higher-resolution display as well.

Japan Display has announced that it will soon begin production of a 5.5-inch screen with a resolution of 2560x1440 (SHown at right running Google Android).

The rumormill quickly moved to predict that this display will be used in the iPhone 6, as Japan Display is one of the companies that supplies components for Apple's phones.

Movin' on Up

Apple has faced criticism that its phones are too small: the largest it offers has a 4-inch screen, while its top rival, the Samsung Galaxy S 5, has a 5.1-inch display.

But there have been frequent rumors, unconfirmed reports, and outright speculation that the next iPhone is going to have a larger screen.

The latest of these says that, in addition to the aforementioned 5.5-inch model, Apple will also be introducing a 4.7-inch phone in September.

If Apple does release a device built around Japan Display's newly-announced product, then Apple will need to add support for 2560x1440 to iOS, and developers will need to modify their apps to support this resolution -- the current iPhone 5S has a 1136x 640 screen.

Still, it wouldn't be the largest resolution offered on an Apple device: older iPads have 1024x768 screens, while the iPad Air and new iPad mini boast 2048x1536 display.
